Campus safety announcement: Secure your property

91��Ƶ Police Department reminds the campus community to take a few extra moments to secure personal belongings, following a recent rise in reported theft cases. The overwhelming majority of these incidents are crimes of opportunity, meaning they happen because property was left unlocked, unattended or otherwise easy to take. A locked door, a secured bike or a few extra seconds spent putting valuables out of sight can make the difference between keeping your property and becoming part of the next crime log.

UAFPD asks everyone to take some simple, practical precautions. When using the Student Recreation Center, take advantage of the complimentary lockers available on site rather than leaving bags, wallets or electronics out in the open.

Bicycles should always be secured with a strong, high-quality lock, ideally through the frame and a fixed rack, since cable locks and quick releases are easy targets. Outdoor bike racks are also not ideal for long-term storage, so if you're heading out of town or away for an extended period, bring your bike somewhere more secure, such as your residence or a storage unit, rather than leaving it locked up outside.

And in any public space, whether it's a classroom, the library, or a common area in your residence hall, never leave laptops, phones or other valuables unattended, even for a moment.
