Expectations

Teaching activities require an approved UAF IACUC (Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee) protocol that may include the completion of basic training (Lab Researcher) requirements for the instructor and all student participants. The lead instructor or teacher is responsible for getting the IACUC protocol approved in advance. This process can take a few months. For information on the IACUC process, see this website or contact the UAF IACUC Administrator, Cassie Pinkel, cjpinkel@alaska.edu, 907-474-7800. LARS staff can also provide you with guidance on IACUC procedures after you complete the request .

LARS is an outdoor facility with limited heated indoor space. Teachers and students should wear clothing suitable for weather conditions and have footwear appropriate for dirt or snow (depending on the season). Teaching activities are expected to be performed and completed between 9 a.m.-5 p.m. LARS staff will be available to introduce the group to the facility. The teaching instructor is expected to manage student activities and ensure student behavior aligns with visitor guidelines and staff instructions. Most teaching labs are observational and don’t disturb the animals or require animal handling. If animal movement or handling is required, LARS staff will work with instructors to design and implement the teaching activities.
