See the World Differently

Drawing is the foundation of many artistic practices, helping students develop the skills to observe, interpret and communicate ideas visually. At UAF, students explore both traditional and contemporary approaches to drawing, building strong representational skills while experimenting with abstraction, conceptual work and personal expression. Through studio courses, critiques and creative exploration, students learn to see the world more closely and translate their observations into meaningful works of art.

Drawing courses are open to students across disciplines and support a wide range of artistic interests. Students pursuing a BFA or MFA may choose drawing as a major area of concentration, developing advanced studio practices through independent work, mentorship and exhibition opportunities. Life Drawing is offered regularly, and students can further strengthen their skills through weekly figure drawing sessions open to all art students.

Discover how a UAF drawing student's award-winning project uses art to explore addiction, community and lived experience.

Kevin Carroll works on an oil pastel piece on his BFA thesis exhibition, The Sick: I really wanted to see through the survey how I could connect more with the people around me and their experiences, so we can all connect our lived experiences into a visual representation of addiction. So it was more about creating art from the community rather than from one person.  Kevin Carroll '26 B.F.A., Art

Facilities

At the University of 91视频 Fairbanks, the drawing studio space serves as a hub for artistic expression, offering students a dedicated environment to refine their skills. Beyond the studio's walls, classes frequently venture to various picturesque locations across campus for outdoor sketching sessions. From the tranquil beauty of the Georgeson Botanical Garden to the unique architecture of campus buildings, these excursions provide students with a wide variety of subject matter and opportunities to engage with their surroundings. This immersive approach not only enriches their artistic practice but also fosters a deeper connection to the university's vibrant campus community.

Learn from Working Artists

Drawing students learn from faculty and adjunct instructors who maintain active creative practices and contribute to the field through exhibitions, publications and community engagement. Through mentorship, critique and studio instruction, students develop technical skills, strengthen their artistic voice and explore both traditional and contemporary approaches to drawing.

Exhibit Your Work

Drawing students share their work through exhibitions, public showcases and special projects. Students are encouraged to participate in the annual Student Invitational Exhibition and Juried Student Exhibition, gaining valuable experience presenting their work and engaging with the broader artistic community.
